Chapter Six

While she disagreed with her brother's attempts to control her dating life, she didn't want to hash it out with him now. No doubt Chad would also wander into the kitchen once he heard the commotion.

Garrett cleared his throat. "Maybe I'm nervous because my best friend is staring at me like he wants to kill me and accusing me when I'm just sitting here."

The tension was so thick in the room; Macy could feel it from where she squatted. Finally, Luke nodded.

"You're right. I'm sorry. Let's go back to sleep."

The moment they were out of the kitchen, Macy put on her boots that were next to the door and crept outside. She rounded the back deck and walked past the hot tub to the deck chairs. The chill of the night caused her to shiver as she sat down. She glanced up. It was one of those rare nights when the sky was clear enough to see what seemed like every single star in the sky.

"It's peaceful out here, isn't it?"

She jumped at the sound of the voice. She turned when an outdoor lantern lit the surrounding space, revealing Chad sitting in a chair next to her.

"Jesus, you scared me," she said as she wrapped her robe tighter around herself.

"Sorry, didn't think anyone else would come out here."

He had a point.

"I couldn't sleep," she said.

"Neither could I. You know, they say it's a bad sign in a relationship if you can't sleep well with your lover," Chad said as he stared straight ahead.

Why would he say that? She glanced back at the house, double checking that he couldn't see into the sunroom from here. She breathed a sigh of relief when she confirmed he couldn’t. If he hadn't seen them together maybe he really was hoping there was trouble in her relationship with Garrett.

Her relationship. The trouble was, it wasn't real, although she desperately wanted him.

"I'm not concerned," she finally replied.

"You should be. It's true. It means deep down you don't trust them." Chad turned to her. "Do you trust him, Macy?"

Damn, she should have stayed inside.

"I do trust him." She snapped. She was done with his condescending attitude. "Chad, look, I know you had hoped that we'd be married—”

"We will be."

Her skin crawled at his words. Why were he and her dad so convinced? The lantern barely illuminated his face, but he was clearly staring at her. It was unnerving.

"I must have heard you wrong."

"No, you didn't. You and I are still getting married. I understand you have to have this fling to get it out of your system. That's fine. After we're married if you want to hire him as the pool boy, go for it."

She stood up. "What are you talking about?"

Chad smiled and clasped his hands together.

"We talked about this already. We must marry each other for the sake of our families."

He must have finally seen the look of horror on her face.

"Oh, Macy. You didn't think bringing this guy here would change that, did you?"

That's exactly what she thought.
